Growing up and Learning to Surf at BONDI BEACH  I grew up surfing at Bondi Beach Sydney Australia, during the '80s, there were only 4 girls that surfed at the time: Me, Pauline, Prue and Lisa. Bondi is a tiny city beach and in the summer you can only surf on the south end of the beach making it even smaller. It was so crowded that I longed for those choppy blown out days so I could get a wave to myself.  First I had a surf mat then I had a boogie board, I always loved the ocean. I used to ride my bike down and surf on my boogie board then go play basketball in the Bondi Pavillion, with whoever turned up to play. Learning to surf took forever there were no surf schools in existence. It was a matter of getting a surfboard and doing it.  My brother got a Mark Richards Twin Fin and he hardly used it at the time because he was into Rap Dancing, he used to take a ghetto blaster ( a stereo) and dance in the city on the street with friends. I borrowed it and was determined to sur...

Supportive Parent or Pushy Parent? | Turning Point: The Official Dr. Phil Blog This is a good article from Dr Phil, about how he raised his boys who are now grown up. I do this with my kids let them try different things. They stick what they enjoy. My son had been doing tennnis since he was 4 years old, all his friends quit. He persisted it didn't worry him that he didn't know the other kids in the class. I admired him for this as it show he really loves the sport itself. He has just started competition tennis and it is quite overwhelming. He doesn't really know the rules only that you have to hit the ball within the lines. His first match up was against the coaches son who is the same age as him. Somehow he won. The coaches son was very upset he was arguing with the umpires 12 to 15 year olds and later he even kicked my son. luckily I was there I called over his Mum to intervene. The other matches or rounds as the coach says were against 9 year olds , kids 2 years older....

DO NOT go to the beach!!!!Land and Marine Tsunami Warning - Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre (JATWC)SHOULD I GO SURFING?

I have just heard the surf report on the radio. Don't go to the beach Tsunami Warning. Caused by an earthquake in Chile. I have never ever heard this before in my LIFE: " Do not go to the beach- tidal waves" How scary is that my hubby has just gone for an early at Rainbow. This must be part of the new marine warning systems they have. The Quicksilver Pro has been cancelled today. There is no wind and the sun is shining. Yesterdays rain has stopped, the perfect surf day. I can even go out at Snapper as the contest is off. My son has a cold and so the kids were going to stay home anyway. When hubby comes back it is going to be my chance to surf. On my own without worrying about kids and time. What should I do? Should I go to for a surf? Leave me a comment what do you thinK? Good Morning, its 5 am and still dark. I love to blog early when noone is awake. Hubby is already off to work. The lovely kids are still sleeping. My curtain is open hoping to glimpse the morning sun rays when they arrive. It looks like the southerly winds kicked in yesterday and the swell may have arrived again, after a 1 week rest. Those sore back and shoulder muscles are recovering. There has been so much surf. It was like clockwork February 1st - the waves rolled in. I kept telling all those lovely Surfing Mums Feb- Mar is cyclone swell season and the swells will come. They looked at me in disbelief as they started at the crystal clear lake with the ripples lapping on the shore. The swell came and left and its due back for the Quicksilver and Roxy Pro that will start tomorrow,Friday the 26th of Feb, if there are waves. Even though its dark here at my house. I just had a look at the Coastalwatch surf Cam for Snapper Rocks and Rainbow Bay The swell hasn't come yet, it...

How I started surfing.

I always loved the beach, we grew at Bondi Beach Sydney Australia. That famous little clam shaped cove. I had to walk over a hill for about 10 minutes then I was there. My first surfing devise was a surf mat, you know what they are, they are back in again. Everything old is new again. That feeling of the cool refreshing ocean on a hot day- wow. Then to get the adrenaline rush of a wave- wahoo! Next came the boogie board /body board. faster more control on the wave. I could go out of the flagged area and surf were those scary fiber glass boards were. "Oh I'll never surf on one of those, they can hurt if I fall off". When I was 15 years old, my brother who loved break dancing at the time, (he would go basking with his ghetto blaster in the city outside the movies) got a Mark Richards Twin fin surfboard. It must be great it had 2 fins instead of 1. So I had a go! First I learned to kneel, about 6 months it took me. Thats why lessons for surfing are the best thing. You l...
