Negotiating things when they are out of waranty. Warranty or Warrantee?

NEGOTIATING POST-WARRANTY REPAIRS PAYS OFF

We managed to negotiate a great deal for repairs on our out-of-warranty mower and save $424! Three years ago we bought a new lawnmower at a cost of $500. It came with a two-year warranty, but exactly three years later it refused to start!

So off to the mower shop we went only to be told a valve had come loose inside the engine. This had damaged other bits internally and the mower was not repairable. As the warranty had run out 12 months earlier we now faced buying another mower at a minimum of $550 new! Not one to just accept this, I rang the company that makes the engines to discuss why their product should fail after just three years. After making a point that I had bought the mower because of their good name and expected it to last a lot longer than it did, we came to an agreement. They would supply a new engine and I would pay for the labour to have it fitted.

The end result was that I paid $126 for the labour and got a new engine, a total saving of about $424! So just because an item is out of the normal warranty period, it doesn't mean you can't do something about it!
