Dear Ms Sheining
Coolangafta & Beachfront Parking
Thanks for your email dated 11 of Apri 201 5,regarding changes to parking in Coolangatta.
Please be advised changes to parking in Coolangatta were initiated through consultations between the local area Councillor Chris Robbins, a number of representatives from the business community and Connecting Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce. These changes follow receipt of a number of complaints and petitions concerning the lack of availability and turnover of parking.
There are no plans to introduce paid parking to the beachfront areas of Coolangatta, Rainbow Bay and Kirra. The three hour beachfront parking policy was established by the 2004 Whole of City Parking Strategy. The City Parking Plan 2015 reiterates this policy outcome in Action 3 to maximise the turnover and availability of beachside parking, aligning with the Ocean Beaches Strategy 2013-2030's outcome: 'everyone can enjoy a beach experience.'
In support of this timed parking, off-street beachfront parking at the eastern end of Marine Parade is unrestricted by time, allowing longer term parking for beach users.
If you have any further questions or wish to discuss please contact Jason Brook, Parking Strategy Officer on (07) 5582 8276 or email: jbrook@qoldcoast.gld.qov.au
Yours sincerely
Kim Mahoney

My FACEBOOK message to our current mayor Tom Tate. April 2015
My Facebook Message to Mayor Tom Tate to keep beach parking at Rainbow Bay FREE.
Hi Tom,
I have seen the introduction of 3 hour parking sign at Coolangatta beach and with sensors coming to Rainbow Bay I know you are heading toward paid beach parking!
I ran for council in the last election I also have met you personally, you said you will support me if you got elected. I voted for you and you are in you have done alot of great things for the Gold Coast.
The most important ones:
1.Cut red tape for construction and brought my family directly, work on the Gold Coast- Thank you very much.
2.Brought back the Kirra Groyn this has had a great impact with waves breaking again at Kirra on most days and lots of people enjoying uncrowded waves there.
This bring me to the issue effecting us Surfers and Beach lovers, paid parking on our beaches especially Coolangatta, Kirra and Rainbow Bay will NEVER be ok; not today, not tomorrow not ever! People want to surf and spend the day on the beach with out paying for parking.
Rainbow, Kirra and Snapper rocks are the best waves in the world and bring so much tourism to the Gold Coast countless millions in revenue. Just go to Rainbow Bay tomorrow and you will see all the tourists enjoying our beaches and sunshine. The people are from across Australia and the world. I surf most days, and have a heavy surfboard; we are a family with kids, its hard to walk far with all our beach gear. This is what I would have to do if paid parking is brought in.
PLEASE KEEP OUR BEACHES FREE!!! I'm sure I can get lots of support for this issue in the community. I will post this on Facebook and see what response I get just from my friends.
Regards,
Sharron Sheining

TOM TATE says:
Sharron, the sensors have absolutely no connection to a push for paid parking or otherwise. They're there to gather real data so that we can make good decisions about parking. That could include more parking spaces or adjusting time limits to balance the interests of local business which depend in foot traffic and users. Councilors have made that view patently clear to officers and resolved to expressly rule out paid parking when concerns are raised, most recently at Kurrawa and Broadbeach Library.

Hi Tom Thanks for your very fast reply. I'm very relived by your response. This was put up my my associate Nicole Lowson: Like most of my fellow friends who live here, we are involved in activities that promote community involvement such as Surf lifesavings clubs (many of our kids do nippers), Surfboard clubs, Surfing Mums etc that get everyone out and active and responsibly using the resource of our beaches in a positive way.
We are family’s that promote responsible beach care practises and are proud of this natural resource and don’t take it for granted. As Sharon has mentioned, while often some of us can walk to the beach on occasion, usually we are going there to surf, bbq with friends etc so driving is necessary. A day at nippers, at our local boardriders club days or simply day out with the family at the beach, is usually a full day event. I simply do not want to be forced to pay for and restricted by time, just to be at my local beaches.
During financial struggles, my family has personally experiences at times over the years, going to the beach is our saviour. We already pay our rates to live here, join community groups as mentioned and just want to live the life that we all moved here for on the Coast, the beach lifestyle without penalty!
